Brief History

In 1951, Sderot was founded as a town for new immigrants, many from North Africa and the Middle East. Its name, “Sderot,” translates to “boulevards” in Hebrew because the town’s wide main avenue was originally lined with eucalyptus trees. These trees symbolized the desire to bring life to the Negev Desert, an idea central to early Zionism. Residents built homes, schools, and public spaces from scratch, forming a close-knit town with a strong sense of community. Due to its location near the Gaza border, Sderot has faced serious security challenges, enduring thousands of rocket and mortar attacks. Amid the chaos, at the Sderot police station, first responders fought under overwhelming odds to regain control. This confrontation reflected both the severity of the attack and the courage of those defending the city. The station was ultimately destroyed, and now, the Sderot police station memorial stands in its place, honoring the lives lost. Today, most residents have returned, gradually restoring the neighborhoods and bravely rebuilding their lives.
